If Only
(Roy Hardinge, copyright 2015)

She likes to watch the snow fall in the mountains.
Its slow decent makes time stand still.
It takes her far from the rush of modern living.
To somewhere where she has some time to kill.

She wishes that her life could always
be the way she feels when she has time.
But independence in this world
comes with a price that’s anything but kind.

Her way to work involves a bit of struggle
“…when did the traffic ever get so bad?
It makes no sense to call this road a freeway".
The stop and go most nearly drives her mad.

Even with the traffic she
arrives before the sun begins to rise.
First one there, the day’s begun
fatigue already showing in her eyes.

Today speeds by just like the rest,
a consequence of numbing daily grind.
She dreams about the things that she could do…if she only had the time…

The day’s intensity keeps her from leaving.
She’s tired and not getting much work done.
The sun’s already hidden by the mountains.
The “freeway” home’s not going to be much fun.

She plays the day back in her mind,
frustrated by the actions of her peers.
Why can’t they look her in the eye
acknowledging the ideas that she shares?

Today speeds by just like the rest,
a consequence of numbing daily grind.
She dreams about the things that she could do…if she only had the time…
